Creators: your account is your income

For a creator the account is not a hobby, it is the business. Three attacks end careers, and a short run of settings shuts most of them down.

If you make your living online, the account is the asset. It is the audience you spent years building, the way brands find you, and the route the money comes in. That changes the stakes: an account takeover is not an inconvenience, it is a business being seized. The people who target creators know this, which is why the attacks are more determined than the ones aimed at ordinary users.

Three do the real damage. Account takeover, where someone gets your password and locks you out of your own following. Payout redirection, where they leave the account looking normal but quietly change the bank or payment details so your earnings land in their pocket. And doxxing, where your home address or real name is dug up and published to intimidate you. Each attacks a different thing - your reach, your money, your safety - and each has a defence.

Takeover is beaten by a strong unique password and a second factor that is not a text message - an authenticator app or a hardware key, because SIM-swap attacks defeat SMS codes. Payout redirection is caught by turning on notifications for any change to payment details, and by checking those details yourself every so often rather than assuming. Doxxing is reduced by keeping your real address off anything public and locking down the personal accounts that leak it.

None of this is glamorous and all of it is quick. Set aside half an hour, go through your main platform's security page, and do the boring items in order. The creators who lose everything are almost never the ones who were unlucky. They are the ones who meant to check the settings and had not got round to it. Get round to it before you need to.

WHAT TO DO
  • ✓Set a strong unique password on every account tied to your income.
  • ✓Turn on app-based or hardware-key two-factor, not SMS codes.
  • ✓Switch on alerts for any change to payout or bank details, and check them.
  • ✓Keep your real name and address off public profiles to cut doxxing risk.
